oct 14/WALKRUN

walk with Delia the Dog
neighborhood / tunnel of trees / grassy boulevard
49 degrees / feels like 44

The heat has broken! 90 degrees on both Saturday and Sunday. Scott told me that, in the recorded history of Minneapolis weather (130ish years), it has only reached 90 in October 6 times. We did 1/3 of that this weekend! I wore 2 shirts and the outer layer of my winter coat and wished I would have worn gloves. Brr. I’m not complaining; I love the cooler air.

5 Walk Things

  1. a few trees are still green
  2. yellow red orange leaves
  3. some trees, including the Welcoming Oaks, are bare
  4. overcast — a bright grayish-white sky
  5. a very strong smell of cigarette smoke near one house — was one of the construction workers smoking?

run: 4.1 miles
monument and back
51 degrees

Even thought my IT band — or is it something else? — still hurts a little, I decided to go out for my first cool fall run. My reasoning: it’s too nice out here to not run, and more importantly, I think running actually helps stretch out my legs (this proved to be true; my IT band felt better on the run, my legs more relaxed). I wore a short-sleeve shirt, my BRIGHT orange sweatshirt, black running tights, and black shorts. I was only a little overheated in the second half and took my sweatshirt off.

5 Run Things

  1. the ravine/gulch above shadow falls was in full color, mostly reds and oranges
  2. the river was scaled and grayish blue and empty
  3. written across one railing on the Lake Street bridge: Free Palestine
  4. a street lamp near the monument: wires gutted, little door housing the wires missing, a date: 1989
  5. crossing over lake street bridge, nearing the Minneapolis side, hearing a woman yell or shriek below — was she okay? Looked again and couldn’t see anyone

As I walked the last few blocks, after finishing my run, I thought about the street lamp and the date. Maybe I could write a poem about this street lamp? Then I thought about how I’ve written about these gutted street lamps before on this log, which led to another idea: what about a poem for my Girl Ghost Gorge collection (tentatively) titled Prints with a series of short images collected from my log entries. Each image would be in a small form — 3/2? — and be brief.
